BOSTON PIZZA DELIVERS 2,200 PIZZAS TO CANADIAN TROOPS IN AFGHANISTAN

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada – In what is thought to be the longest pizza delivery in Canadian history, Boston Pizza has embarked on a mission to deliver 2,200 pizzas 6,700 miles around the world to Kabul, Afghanistan.

The project started with email correspondence between Michael Cyr, Executive VP for Boston Pizza International Inc. and his brother, Cpl. Patrick Cyr who is serving in Kabul. Cpl. Cyr said that besides his family, he missed the little things from home like a good pizza. That innocent comment got the team at Boston Pizza thinking and a plan began to take shape as corporate staff at Boston Pizza worked with key contacts in the Canadian military to make the delivery to Kabul a reality.

With the assistance of the Canadian Department of National Defence, a refrigerated container, filled with 2,200 frozen 12” pizza shells, pizza sauce and ingredients, was loaded onto a military plane at CFB Trenton on October 31st, and arrived in Kabul on Sunday, November 2nd. The crate will be unloaded and contents distributed for cooking as part of Remembrance Day services at Camp Julien and Camp Warehouse.  The pizzas will be cooked by the military in Kabul to the same standards and specifications used by Boston Pizzas in Canada.

“This was a great opportunity for Boston Pizza, on behalf of all of our franchisees and staff, to say a simple thank you to the men and women of Canada's armed forces serving in Afghanistan," says Mike Cordoba, President and COO of Boston Pizza International Inc.

Boston Pizza International Inc. has over 175 restaurants in Canada, with 2003 sales in excess of $350 million. The company has been designated as one of Canada’s 50 Best Managed Companies for the past nine years, as determined by Deloitte & Touche, CIBC Commercial Banking and The National Post.  Last year Boston Pizza’s President and COO, Mike Cordoba, was listed as one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 by Report on Business Magazine.  Boston Pizza International Inc. is headquartered in Richmond, B.C., and has a regional office in Mississauga, Ontario to support its expansion.  For more information visit www.bostonpizza.com.
